Solar Panel Review Alert: LG Solar

LG Solar Panel

The LG solar panels review on this page will give you a clear idea of the solar panels manufactured by LG.  LG has over 30 years of experience in the world of solar photovoltaics, as that is when they began their research on crystalline silicon cells. LG started manufacturing large scale PV modules at LG’s facility in Gumi, South Korea, in the year 2009, after 20 years of research and development.

After manufacturing solar panels for over a decade, LG is currently on its 6th generation solar panels and manufactures solar panels worth over 2 gigawatts per years. LG is a tier 1 solar panel manufacturer with numerous awards, ultra-efficient cell technology, and offers an industry-leading warranty. These features make it difficult for many companies to compete with LG. Only a few solar companies have the ability to compete with LG’s quality, service, and reliability level.

LG panels are very popular and high rated by solar installers and customers in Australia and North America, even though these panels are more expensive than their competition. The look, quality, details and finishing of the LG panels are of the highest standards.

The majority of solar panel manufacturers produce monocrystalline solar panels based on very common, cheap, and P-type silicon cells. At the same time, LG manufactures solar panels by using N-type monocrystalline cells with higher efficiency and a lower rate of degradation over the life of the solar panel.

Recently, LG Energy introduced a range of solar panels known as ‘Mono X Plus’. These panels are cost-effective and built by using lower-cost P-type monocrystalline cells.

LG also manufactures 72 solar cell panels for large scale commercial projects, along with residential solar panels. The commercial solar panels use the same advanced cello multi-wire technology and the dual-sided bifacial panels that have the ability to increase power output by an addition of 27 per cent.

How good are the LG Panels?

  • Panel Strength and Durability

LG engineers extremely strong double-wall aluminium frames on all its solar panels that are rated better than average. The solar panels have an impressive wind rating with 5,400Pa on the front and 4000Pa on the rear side of the panels. This value is almost double the 2400Pa industry-standard wind rating.

The LG panels are rated to have the highest level of corrosion and ammonia resistance and are suitable to be installed in coastal areas with high salt mist levels, a maximum severity of 6.

  • Service and Warranty

LG is one of the only 6 six solar manufacturers in the solar world that offer both product and performance warranty of 25 years on the Neon 2 and Neon R panels. Panasonic and SunPower are two of the other manufacturers who offer a 25-years product and performance warranty. In contrast, the majority of solar companies offer a product warranty of 12-15 years and a performance warranty of 25 years.

The performance warranty of LG is above average, with a minimum of 90.08% retained capacity after 25 years on the Neon 2 range and 90.8% on the Neon R range. These warranties show the type of confidence LG has in its manufactured solar panels.

  • Quality and Performance

LG uses two EL flash tests during solar panel production, both before and after lamination, to ensure that there are no defects or micro-cracks on the cells. LG’s high-level N-type cells have a long-term performance regardless of the light induced degradation.

LG performs strict quality control and testing throughout the production of these solar panels to ensure long term performance and reliability.

  • Sustainability of LG Solar

In 2015, LG installed over 11,000 solar panels on a massive rooftop solar array of 3.2 megawatts on its South Korean manufacturing facility. This installation took place to reduce the environmental impact of solar panels manufacturing. LG installed more than 18 megawatts worth of solar across its factories in Korea to date.

Corporate knights nominated LG Electronics several times as one of the world’s top 100 most sustainable corporations. Corporate Knights also stated that LG has committed to improving sustainability constantly, reducing emissions, and moving closer to a circular economy.

  • Efficiency

The efficiency of the LG panels varies depending on the specific models that you select for your home. The lower end solar panels of LG have an approximate efficiency of 18.4 per cent, while the premium LG panels operate with an efficiency rate of 22.0 per cent. This efficiency is ideal for a lot of Australian homes. Very high-efficiency solar panels, such as SunPower usually come with a very high price tag and are not really necessary unless you have very little space on your roof.

Like everything in this world, we have to pay a premium price in order to get the premium equipment. LG panels do cost a lot more than their competition. The Neon 2 costs around 25 per cent more than the standard mono solar panels, but the truth is that you get a lot more for your money.

Installing solar is a long-term investment, so it is essential to consider the performance, efficiency, and rate of degradation over the life of the solar panels.

Based on the solid history of reliability and quality of the LG panels, there is no doubt that in the next 10 to 15 years, the Neon 2 and Neon R panels will outperform the majority of lower-cost solar panels available on the solar market.

Although there are several solar panel manufacturers that are facing financial difficulties, there is no doubt that LG will be there to back up any potential warranty claims in the future, considering the size and history of the LG Corporation.
