Improve Energy Efficiency Of Your Home

Improve Energy Efficiency Of Your Home

As of today’s date, the rising cost of electricity and the alarming effects of climate change and global warming are worrying people all over the world. These issues are causing people to search for more and more ways to improve the energy efficiency of their home. The reason behind this is that improved energy efficiency conserves energy in a household and this conservation of energy reduces the cost of electricity bills significantly. In addition to that, it is helpful for the environment and reduces the harmful effects of climate change.

Households that improve their energy efficiency are seen to conserve energy and cut off the use of unnecessary electricity. This helps to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and other harmful greenhouse gases and ensures a great savings for the homeowners. In this guide, few ways of improving the energy efficiency of a household have been discussed.

  • Switch to Solar Electricity and Solar Water Heating

One of the best ways of making your home more energy efficient is to switch to solar. Solar power systems and solar water heating systems are an efficient way of conserving energy in a household. Electricity and hot water are necessary in any household and costs a significant amount of money each month. Switching to solar will power your household appliances with solar energy during the day, reducing the amount of energy you import from the mains electricity grid.

The same goes for solar water heating systems. Water heating requires a significant amount of electricity which causes a rise in electricity bills and switching to solar water heaters reduces this use of electricity. The water gets heated as solar energy is transferred to heat.

  • Improve Insulation

A major reason why households use more energy than required is due to poor insulation. During the cold weather, households with poor insulation lose a lot of heat which results in an excess use of electricity than required. This not only increases the electricity bills but also causes harm to the environment. Thus, it is essential to improve the insulation in order to make your home more energy efficient.

  • Install Energy Efficient Appliances

A great way of making your home more efficient in terms of energy usage is to install appliances that are energy efficient. These appliances typically come with features that do not use any unnecessary amount of electricity and automatic turn on and off feature. Even though the initial cost of these appliances might be a bit high, the overall advantage is worth it. The installation of these energy efficient appliances is an investment and the use is environmentally friendly.

If you already have energy efficient appliances installed in your home, make sure that you clean them and conduct proper maintenance to ensure the efficiency of these components. Dirty or poorly maintained appliances often consume more electricity than required.

  • Use large Appliances during the Day

If you switch to a solar power system, the solar panels will generate electricity during the day. During the daylight, the energy used in the household typically comes from solar power systems. We typically recommend the use of the large appliances during the day so that these components operate using solar energy and not energy imported from the grid.

If you do not have a solar battery installed, then this excess energy will get exported to the mains electricity grid. The large appliances such as washing machine, dishwasher, and so on at night will use electricity that comes from the mains grid and will cause an increase in electricity bill.

  • Install a Clothesline

The majority of people use a dryer with both washing machine and dishwasher. The use of a dryer allows the clothes and utensils to dry easily and without any hassle. However, dryers consume a significant amount of electricity which in turn increases the cost of electricity bill by a great amount.

In order to avoid this energy consumption, we prefer the installation of a clothesline. You will have to hang the clothes on the rope and let it air dry. The same concept goes for utensils, wash them and place them in an area where you can air dry them. This will reduce the cost of electricity bill by a decent amount and will also help the environment.

  • Replace Doors and Windows

Windows and doors are also a major reason why hot air in the winter and cold air in the summer escapes from a household, causing the appliances to use more electricity to adjust the indoor temperature. A lot of old window and door models are not energy efficient and allow a lot of air to escape. In order to make your home energy efficient, changing your doors and windows with the new, energy efficient models is a great idea. This also goes for the flooring and roof model of a household.

  • Install Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)

In the majority of households, we typically use the regular light bulbs that are widely available in the market. A major disadvantage of these bulbs is that they use a lot of energy than required which in turn causes the cost of electricity bill to increase. In order to make sure that your bulbs are consuming the right amount of energy, replace the regular bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs consume the required amount of electricity and provide a durable performance overall.

Final Words

Making your home energy efficient allows you to save a significant amount of money while helping the environment at the same time. There are several ways of making a home energy efficient and the ways are easy to follow. A little awareness can reduce the energy consumption of our homes by a significant amount and allow us to prevent energy waste. There is no doubt that energy efficiency is essential for both financial and environmental reasons.
